 Celebrating our 30th Year

2016 Kayak Models

2016… It’s hard for me to believe but this is our 30th year as a kayak and canoe shop. Every year it becomes more difficult trying to figure out which new model kayaks to carry in our already expansive line-up. It is tough at times to decide what model to promote and which of the models to let go or pass by. As best we can, the issue is approached from two perspectives; as paddlers ourselves and as a customer coming to our shop looking for accurate information, experience and honest recommendations. The models listed below are those that we are planning to or already do carry at our shop. The actual models we carry in stock may vary somewhat from this initial listing. New models for 2013 are so indicated. And so, here we go….again.

For models that are not listed here from manufacturers that we do represent, please visit our “Manufacturers” page for direct links to the particular manufacturer for further information. Even if we don’t normally carry them in stock, we can certainly order them for a customer.

Kayak Materials of Construction:
  • Polyethylene
  • Thermoformed Acrylic Plastic
  • Fiberglass
  • Kevlar, Carbon composites
A plastic in pellet form that is poured into an enclosed heated mold that is then rotated to flow the plastic throughout the mold. The molding process, both heating and rotation, is controlled by computer programming to ensure the quality and thickness of plastic of the kayak. Rotationally molded polyethylene is the least expensive material for kayak production. The material will withstand more abuse than other materials but weighs more and does not have the structural rigidity of other materials. Care has to be taken in storing and tying polyethylene kayaks onto vehicles because of the possibility of deforming the kayak. Color goes all the way through the plastic. Damage to this material is usually caused by constant dragging of the boat over rough surfaces. That damage can usually only be repaired through plastic welding.
A rigid, thermoformed acrylic plastic with thin ABS inner and outer layers. The plastic is formed at a much higher temperature than conventional rotationally molded polyethylene plastic. The plastic has a much harder finish than softer polyethylene plastic thus offering more scratch resistance and ease of cleaning and maintaining. The thermoformed acrylic plastic also has more structural rigidity than polyethylene and holds its shape better. A thermoformed acrylic plastic kayak is generally lighter in weight than it would be in polyethylene. Color goes all the way through the plastic. Damage to this material can usually be repaired.
A traditional construction process that uses layers of fiberglass cloth and resin hand laid in an open mold that usually has gel-coat applied into the mold as a first step. Newer technology has brought changes in the process such as vacuum-bagging and/or infusion which results in a lighter, stronger boat. The hull, deck and cockpit rim are all formed in separate molds and then assembled after having been taken out of the molds. Fiberglass kayaks usually cost more than either rotationally molded polyethylene or thermoformed acrylic plastic boats, but can be lighter in weight and have a somewhat nicer feel in the water. Damage to fiberglass can usually be repaired.
These materials are used to give greater strength while reducing the weight of the kayak. Process is the same as in fiberglass construction especially vacuum-bagging and/or infusion to gain the highest strength to weight ratio possible. Using these materials increases fairly dramatically the cost of the kayak. If damaged, these materials can be repaired. The joy of the lightness of these boats is while carrying them or loading on a vehicle.

CAL–TEK

All Cal–Tek models are built of fiberglass.

Seal Bear 17.7 – This 17' 9" long x 19.25" wide, 34 lbs., Arctic Greenland fiberglass sea kayak is designed by Dan Sheehan for those intermediate or skilled kayakers who are looking for a low volume hard chined kayak that will provide efficient performance for Inuit paddling techniques and many rolling techniques. This innovative design combines the functionality of the Arctic- Greenland sea hunting skin boats with state-of-the-art design skills and materials technology. Handling characteristics include excellent edging ability and strong tracking yet it has good maneuverability. MSRP is $4085.

Greenland 15 – A Bart Hauthaway design built by Dan Sheehan that is 15' 3" long x 24" wide, 32lbs. in fiberglass. This fiberglass kayak is a no frills great paddling craft that is fun to develop hip, knee and torso control. I had been borrowing Dan’s own Greenland that Bart built for him several years ago (actually I had been holding his kayak hostage until he built one for me). MSRP is $2523.

Rob Roy – Dan Sheehan is also producing another Bart Hauthaway design. This 10' 6" long, 29" wide fiberglass decked canoe is paddled like a kayak and features a large (4') cockpit and weighs about 29lbs. with a comfortable minicell foam seat A stable classic design boat for paddling or fishing on ponds, lakes and quiet streams. MSRP is $1999. Optional minicell foam seat adds $102.

Sugar Island – Another Bart Hauthaway design built by Dan Sheehan. This is such a sweet boat to paddle! At 12' long x 27" wide, 30 lbs., it is light enough to get to the water whenever the urge comes and has plenty of performance built in that allows a paddler to handle some fairly choppy water. I own two of these and they get used very frequently. Ideal for ponds, lakes, quiet rivers, estuaries and protected coastal waters. This boat features a large open cockpit for ease of entry and exit, and a comfortable minicell foam seat. Go bird watching, take your camera, fishing pole, lunch, or just enjoy the time spent in this little beauty. A word of caution though… as with all of Dan’s boats, you just have to love the color of light gray! MSRP is $2168. Optional minicell foam seat adds $102. Optional curved seatback adds $147.

ULTIMATE SERIES FAMILY
Fresh concepts in hull design, stability, seating comfort, and the ability to accessorize for fishing are the strong points of these designs. These models have incorporated many innovative ideas in hull design, stability, comfort, and versatility. The Tunnel Hull™ design offers a maximum of stability as well as a new level of seating comfort because of the slightly ergonomically different sitting position of the paddler. Also, the 1st Class Seating™ has been well-thought out for comfort, ease of use (the seat slides and may be quickly taken out of the boat to use as a camp chair or for ease of loading the boat on a vehicle), strength, longevity and uses environmentally friendly materials. The Adapt-a-Trak™ rail accessory attachment system allows fishing rod holders, sprayskirts and other accessories to be quickly attached. Whether for fishing, photography or just paddling, these kayaks have received a lot of attention and favorable comments in the few months since their introduction. These series of models may just become the “ultimate” boat for many, many paddlers.

Ultimate Basic Series
The Basic Series of Ultimates uses the same stable hull and construction as the Ultimate Series but is a more utilitarian version at an economical price point. Accessorize when and how you want.
