Billington Sea Kayak is the place to go for the experienced kayaker, the beginner, or those who just want to find out more about paddle sports. BSK is a unique kayak and canoe business. At our shop location right on Billington Sea, a large inland lake located in Plymouth, Massachusetts (about an hour's drive from Boston) we have a full line of kayaks and canoes to choose from, on-water tryouts every weekend of the warmer seasons, kayaking instruction taught by certified instructors, and helpful staff who are kayaking enthusiasts themselves.

Paddling with Pilot Whales Buying a boat: The most important aspect of buying a kayak or canoe is that it should fit the paddler. No matter how highly recommended a boat is, it's not for you unless you are comfortable, safe, and the kayak or canoe is well suited to your paddling purpose. Your body build, paddling skill level, and where and how you want to paddle are critically important. A boat for inland waterways is different from a sea kayak designed for touring long distances on the open ocean. The type of weather you expect to be paddling in and the length of your boating trips are important too. Are you a skilled paddler looking for a performance kayak, a beginner looking for a safe and stable boat, or a distance sea traveler looking for a high volume kayak with speed and cargo space? Billington Sea Kayak has all the things you need to choose the right boat for you: a large inventory of boats, a friendly and knowledgeable staff, and on-water tryouts every weekend. You can't tell how a kayak will fit you or perform on the water by sitting in it on a showroom floor. Do come and try out our kayaks, canoes, and paddles on Billington Sea!

Choosing the right paddle: No less important than choosing the right kayak or canoe is choosing the right paddle for you and your paddling plans. There are a variety of paddle materials, from wood to graphite. Paddles come in several lengths, usually measured in centimeters. Important considerations are your size and strength, your paddling style and skill, and how you want to handle your kayak. If you are looking for a paddle for power starts, quick maneuverability, and plenty of bracing ability, you may want to consider a larger blade surface paddle. If you're concerned about wear and tear on your joints and becoming more fatigued after a few hours of paddling, a narrower, longer blade surface may be the right choice. There are choices of paddle materials (wood, fiberglass, aluminum, graphite) that should be considered in terms of where you will be paddling, conditions, and the length of your paddling trips.

Rafting up the kayaksFor kayakers, there's the issue of choosing a feathered or unfeathered paddle. This is very much a personal preference matter, and you will want to try out both options before you make up you mind. If you are sure of your preference, a one piece paddle could be a choice that serves you well. However, you may prefer a two-piece,'take-apart' paddle that will make into both feathered or unfeathered options. Two piece paddles also have the advantage of being easier to store, transport, and bring along as a second paddle. The most important thing to consider when buying a paddle is to make sure it fits your size and paddling style. At Billington Sea Kayak, you can try our paddles at the same time you try out our kayaks and canoes - on the water, every weekend.
